The City of Matlosana covers about 3625km and is situated 164km south west of Johannesburg on the N12.

Klerksdorp was originally established and developed as a regional service centre between the gold mining areas on the Rand and the diamond mining fields In the Cape and in the late 1800s.

Klerksdorp is the largest city in the North West Province.

The city was founded in the 1837 when the Voortrekkers settled on the banks of the Schoonspruit (“Clear Stream”), which flows through the town.

Today Klerksdorp is celebrated as the birthplace of Anglican Archbishop Emereritus Desmond Mpilo Tutu on October 7,1931.

Klerksdorp has a semi-arid climate with warm hot summers and cool, dry winters and mostly rainfall during summer.

The greater city area surrounding Klerksdorp, incorporates the town of Orkney, Kanana, Stilfontein, Khuma, Hartebeesfontein and Tigane.

Orkney lies on the banks of the Vaal River, The river basin thus offers a range of leisurely water activities that attract local and international tourists throughout the year. Activities include boating, fishing and water skiing.

Klerksdorp forms the economic heart of the North West Province.

Apart from mining, Klerksdorp positioned as a notable medical, retail and educational Centre for North West Province and Northern Free State. Klerksdorp has 4 private hospitals with some of the best cancer treatment facilities and approximately 72 specialist. Life Anncron hospital is the only cardiology facility in the central region of the North West Province. Cardiology spectrum has the ability to do vascular and cardiac surgery on high-risk patients and patients with structural heart disease, and a fully integrated cardiac unit is available to patients.

The Klerksdorp district is a major contributor to South African agriculture: maize, sorghum, groundnuts and sunflower are important crops farmed in the district. Klerksdorp has the largest agricultural co-op in the southern hemisphere named Senwes.

The farming district is also known for its Sussex Cattle Herds – the city is the headquarters of the South African Sussex Cattle Breeders Association.

Tourist Attractions:

*Mining shafts excavated in the 1880s.

*The Klerksdorp Museum. It was built in 1981 as a prison and served as such until 1973.

*The Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve, located about 15km from Klerksdorp. It has 30 species of game and 150 species of birds.

*The Oudorp hiking trail. It is a 12km long trail and winds its way through the oldest parts of town.

*Goudkoppie is the city’s largest tourist attraction. It is situated near both the N12 highway and the Johannesburg- Cape Town railway line.

*The Klerkdorp Dam, 10km outside Klerksdorp on the road to Ventersdorp.

*Rio Casino Resort.

*The newly built Matlosana Mall, the largest shopping centre in the North West Province.

*The Klerksdorp Air Show is organized and run by Pilots including South African Aerobatic Championship winner Clifford Lotter, at the PC Pelser Airport and remains one of the best air shows in South Africa.

*Harry Oppenheimer stadium situated between Klerksdorp and Vaal River Operations in a popular sports field for some of the bigger schools’ athletics competitions.

The city is a hot spot for younger buyers who aim to flourish their careers in the mining and agricultural industries. Older home owners, on the other hand, enjoy the tranquility offered in one of the many lovely suburbs.
